Worksheet: The Self-Reconstruction Protocol

Designed for the Overwhelmed Professional

By Ari Sotiriou UK Accredited Psychotherapist

This worksheet is a bridge between the chaos of the “Internal Storm” and the stability of the “Professional Self.”

I. Mapping the Professional Boundary

Identify the “Dump”: Write down one specific task or responsibility currently on your plate that belongs to someone else.

The Reframe: Instead of saying “I am overwhelmed,” draft a sentence to your manager: “I am concerned that my focus on [Task X] is diverting my expertise away from [Core Legal/Financial Risk Y], which may impact the department’s quarterly goals. How can we reallocate this to ensure the firm’s safety?”

II. The Evidence of Resilience (Contre-Néant)

The Trilingual Self: List three times you solved a complex problem in a language that is not your mother tongue.

The Survival Record: You feel you have “achieved nothing.” List two professional crises you navigated five years ago. Where are those crises now? (They are gone; you survived them).

III. Decoupling the Mirror

The Good Experience: Write down one memory of a “pleasant moment” with your ex-partner.

The Ownership: Acknowledge: “I brought the capacity for this joy into the room. This capacity is a part of me, not a gift from him. I still own it.”

IV. The “True Self” Activity

The Non-Productive Task: Commit to one activity this weekend that has zero professional or social value (e.g., sitting by the sea, listening to music, buying a book you don’t “need” to read for work).

The Observation: When the “guilt” or “anger” arises, simply note it: “This is my False Self trying to get back to work. I am choosing to stay here for 10 more minutes.”

Clinical Note: The path to recovery for the “high-functioning” patient is not found in a diagnostic label, but in the slow, patient work of rebuilding the internal “holding ground.” We move from the scream of the storm to the steady hand on the rudder.

Reclaiming Your Internal Compass

If the “Internal Storm” described in this case feels familiar, know that high-functioning success does not have to come at the cost of emotional exhaustion. Whether you are navigating a high-stakes career in the City, managing international corporate law, or facing the isolation of a significant personal transition, you do not have to carry the “weight of the world” alone.

Psychodynamic therapy offers more than temporary relief; it provides a profound understanding of the patterns that keep you stuck in cycles of anger, anxiety, or self-doubt. By building a secure “holding environment” together, we can move beyond the “False Self” of professional compliance and toward a life of genuine agency and resilience.
